April 30, 2009 To: Parents and Guardians of Hinckley-Big Rock School District Students
Please be advised that the school district is taking appropriate steps to provide for the health and well-being of all students and staff members. To that end, the following information should be noted: 1) All individuals should practice appropriate health habits in order to stop the spread of germs. 2) If your child exhibits any of the following symptoms (sore throat, muscle ache, cough, headache and a temperature of 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit or higher) he or she should be referred to a physician for proper care. Children should not attend school if they are sick. In addition, if a child presents flu-like symptoms while at school, his/her parent(s) will be contacted and the student will be sent home immediately. Prior to the child's return to school, the parent(s) should obtain a physician's statement of release. 3) In the event that a case of Swine Influenza is documented or a probable case coupled with higher than average absenteeism is documented by the school district, the district will enact immediate steps to protect the health and safety of all students and staff. Those steps will include the following: A) The immediate closure of a particular school, schools or of the school district 4) Should the closure of a particular school, schools or the school district be necessary prior to the start of a regular school day, parents, guardians and students will be notified of the closure through the regular emergency closing channels. These would include the school district website, radio and television announcements. 5) Should the closure of a particular school, schools or the entire school district be necessary during the regular school day, the school district will make every attempt to contact an individual child's parent or guardian prior to the release of that child to his/her home. To assist us in this process, the district is asking that parents and guardians update all of their contact numbers through the office of their respective school(s). Please be assured that the school district will work closely with the Illinois Department of Public Health, the DeKalb County Health Department, the Kane County Health Department and the Regional Office of Education to provide for the health and well being of your child. Sincerely,
Dr. Jim Hammack |
![]() Wellness Tip #1
Dear Hinckley-Big Rock CUSD #429 Community Members: Welcome and thank you for visiting this new section on “Wellness Tips.” The purpose of this section is to supply you with information that can benefit your overall health and well-being. As with any health and fitness information that you may receive, it is advisable to always consult your physician before embarking on a significant change in your exercise and eating habits. Further, if you require additional information regarding a particular “Wellness Tip”, the source of the information will be included for your reference. Tip #1 – Regular Physical Activity Can Produce Long-Term Health Benefits Source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) www.health.gov Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans These are the major research findings on the health benefits of physical activity: 1. Regular physical activity reduces the risk of many adverse health outcomes. 2. Some physical activity is better than none. 3. For most health outcomes, additional benefits occur as the amount of physical activity increases through higher intensity, greater frequency, and/or longer duration. 4. Most health benefits occur with at least 150 minutes (2 hours and 30 minutes) a week of moderate intensity physical activity, such as brisk walking. Additional benefits occur with more physical activity. 5. Both aerobic (endurance) and muscle-strengthening (resistance) physical activity are beneficial. 6. Health benefits occur for children and adolescents, young and middle-aged adults, older adults, and those in every studied racial and ethnic group. 7. The benefits of physical activity occur for people with disabilities. 8. The benefits of physical activity far outweigh the possibility of adverse outcomes. ACTION STEP: 1. Schedule time within your weekly schedule to engage in moderate physical activity. Examples of such activity may include walking/hiking, swimming, bike riding, and weight training to name only a few. It is also recommended that you make you exercise routines enjoyable by doing them with a friend or family member. Best wishes to you as you move forward toward better health and wellness. |
